How Do You Make a Live Wallpaper from a Video?

Turn a video into live wallpaper by choosing the target screen, cropping, trimming, looping, exporting, and testing a playback copy.

To make a live wallpaper from a video, create a separate playback copy for the target screen. Choose the aspect ratio and resolution, trim the useful motion, build a clean loop, remove or mute audio, and export an H.264 MP4 at a frame rate the device can play smoothly. Then import that copy into the wallpaper app. Keep the original video untouched so you can make a different crop later.

The destination must come first. A 16:9 desktop loop, a 21:9 ultrawide background, an Android Home Screen, and an iPhone Live Photo do not use the same framing or playback behavior. Exporting one file and hoping every device crops it well usually hides the subject or cuts interface elements in half.

Confirm that you may edit the source

Use footage you created or have permission to adapt. A video being publicly viewable does not grant permission to download, edit, or redistribute it. Keep the source license and purchase record with the master file.

Choose the screen shape before you crop

Write down the target display's native pixel dimensions. Common desktop canvases include 1920x1080, 2560x1440, and 3840x2160 at 16:9. An ultrawide monitor may use 3440x1440, while a phone is usually portrait and needs a much taller composition.

Set the editing timeline to the target aspect ratio. Scale the video until it fills the frame, then reposition it so the important subject stays inside the visible area. Do not stretch the image. A circular HUD element must remain circular.

For a landscape-to-portrait conversion, simple center cropping works only when the action is already near the center. Otherwise, animate the crop position slowly or rebuild the layout from the source elements. Keep clocks, phone camera cutouts, desktop icons, and taskbars in mind, but do not bake a fake system clock into the video.

Trim the clip to one useful motion cycle

Select a section long enough for the movement to breathe but short enough to repeat cleanly. Remove camera bumps, scene cuts, fades to black, and frames containing controls or subtitles.

Find a start and end where position, direction, speed, lighting, and texture can connect. A rotating radar sweep may have an exact cycle. Clouds or smoke often need an overlap and blend. A forward-then-reverse edit can work for symmetrical motion but makes people, flowing text, and physical events look unnatural.

Decide whether the wallpaper needs sound

Most live wallpaper should be silent. Remove the audio track during export or mute it in the player. A hidden audio stream can still cause surprises when an application update resets volume or the output device changes.

Export a playback copy

For Windows, macOS wallpaper apps, Android, and general local playback, H.264 video in an MP4 container is the safest starting point. Use a constant frame rate that matches the useful source motion. Thirty frames per second suits many slow ambient loops; sixty can preserve fast line sweeps when the hardware and display benefit.

Export at the target resolution and inspect the result at 100 percent. Avoid banding in gradients and block noise around thin HUD lines. Hardware decoding support matters more than choosing the newest codec by name.

Do not use ProRes 4444 merely because the source has a .mov extension. ProRes 4444 is valuable when you need an alpha channel for compositing an overlay over another image. Handle phone-specific delivery

Android support varies by manufacturer. Some Gallery apps can apply a local video directly; other devices need a reputable local-video wallpaper app. Export a portrait H.264 MP4, move it to permanent internal storage, and use the device's preview to check the crop. An iPhone does not use an arbitrary MP4 as a continuously playing Home Screen background. On supported iOS versions, Apple allows a Live Photo on the Lock Screen. Test the exported file, not only the timeline

Open the final MP4 in a normal video player and repeat it for at least ten cycles. Then import it into the actual wallpaper application and check:

  • the loop point at normal viewing speed;
  • crop and scaling on every intended monitor;
  • smooth playback after sleep and sign-in;
  • CPU, GPU, memory, and temperature;
  • pause behavior under full-screen apps;
  • audio state;
  • file availability after moving or cleaning the Downloads folder.

If the editor loops smoothly but the wallpaper pauses at the join, test a shorter H.264 encode on local storage. If the entire clip stutters, reduce resolution or frame rate and confirm hardware decoding. If only the composition looks wrong, return to the crop rather than compressing the same framing again.

The reliable workflow is destination, crop, trim, loop, export, and device test. Treat each new aspect ratio as a separate deliverable derived from the master. That keeps the source reusable and gives the wallpaper player a simple file built for the screen it must fill.
