What Is the Best Resolution for a Live Wallpaper?

The best live-wallpaper resolution is the native pixel resolution of the target display, with the same aspect ratio. Use 1920x1080 for a Full HD 16:9 screen, 2560x1440 for QHD, and 3840x2160 for 4K UHD. If one file must serve several displays, start with the largest needed source and create smaller playback copies.
Match pixels and aspect ratio
Resolution describes pixel dimensions; aspect ratio describes shape. A 3840x2160 video and a 1920x1080 monitor are both 16:9, so scaling is straightforward. A 3440x1440 ultrawide is roughly 21:9. Applying a 16:9 file to it requires either side bars, edge cropping, or distortion.
Choose fit to show the entire video with possible empty space. Choose fill to cover the display and crop excess edges. Avoid stretch because it changes the geometry. A targeting circle that becomes an oval makes a HUD look visibly wrong.
For phones, orientation matters more than a headline number. A landscape 4K file contains enough pixels, but most of its sides disappear in a 9:16 crop. Create a vertical version with the subject repositioned rather than letting the wallpaper picker make an uncontrolled crop.
When 4K is useful

Frame rate is a separate decision
Resolution does not tell you how smooth motion will be. A 4K 30 fps clip has more pixels but fewer temporal samples than a 1080p 60 fps clip. Slow ambient motion often looks fine at 30 fps. Fast radar sweeps, thin rotating lines, or quick particles may benefit from 60 fps.
The display refresh rate does not create missing video frames. A 60 fps file shown on a 120 Hz screen repeats each frame twice. That can still look smooth. A higher wallpaper frame rate should be chosen because the source motion needs it, not just because the monitor advertises a high refresh rate.
A practical selection order
- Read the display's native resolution and orientation in system settings.
- Choose a source with the same aspect ratio.
- Use native resolution when the device can decode it smoothly.
- Step down to 1080p or 30 fps if playback stutters or battery use is excessive.
- Keep the 4K original for editing and future displays.
