Can a Live Wallpaper Work on the Lock Screen?

Check whether video wallpaper works on Windows, macOS, Android, and iPhone lock screens and what the platform limits are.

A live wallpaper can work on some lock screens, but the answer depends on the operating system and device maker. Android and iPhone offer forms of animated Lock Screen wallpaper. Windows and macOS use more restricted lock-screen systems, and a desktop wallpaper app normally cannot draw behind the secure sign-in screen.

Android Lock Screens

Many Android phones let you apply a video or live wallpaper to the Home Screen, Lock Screen, or both. Open the video in the manufacturer's Gallery app and look for Set as wallpaper. If that choice is missing, long-press the Home Screen and check Wallpaper & style or use a trusted local-video wallpaper app.

The available combinations vary. A Samsung phone may accept a short Lock Screen video directly, while another manufacturer may only expose installed live-wallpaper services. Some versions apply a live wallpaper to both screens and do not offer Lock Screen only. Always use the final system preview to see which targets your phone supports.

iPhone Lock Screens

An iPhone uses Live Photos for user-created animated Lock Screen wallpaper. Convert the video to a Live Photo, then choose it under Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos. The animation follows iOS rules and is not a normal MP4 playing forever. Model, iOS version, Reduce Motion, and the Live Photo's metadata can affect whether motion is available.

The paired Home Screen is typically a still treatment rather than a continuously running video. See the iPhone video-wallpaper instructions for the conversion and troubleshooting steps.

Windows Lock Screens

Windows 11 supports pictures, slideshows, and Windows Spotlight on the Lock Screen. Desktop video-wallpaper applications run in the signed-in user session behind desktop icons; they do not usually replace the secure sign-in interface. If an app claims that it can, verify exactly whether it means the Lock Screen, a screensaver, or simply the desktop shown after sign-in.

A screensaver can provide motion before the computer locks or while it is idle, but it is a separate feature. Configure sign-in requirements independently so visual customization does not weaken security.

macOS Lock Screens

macOS can show Apple aerials and may animate the transition between the desktop and Lock Screen. A third-party app that plays a custom desktop video generally stops when the session locks. This is intentional: the login window belongs to the operating system, not the wallpaper player.

You can select a still Lock Screen appearance through macOS wallpaper settings and use a matching video on the desktop. That produces a coherent transition without asking an app to modify a protected system surface.

Pick a safe fallback

If motion is unsupported, export a sharp still frame from the same video. Choose a frame with enough empty space for the clock, notifications, and sign-in controls. This also uses less power and avoids a distracting loop on a screen you usually see briefly.

Do not install software that asks you to disable security features just to animate a Lock Screen. Platform limits can change with operating-system updates, so check the current official wallpaper settings on the exact device rather than relying on a generic compatibility claim.
